A very good book that I can recommend is "Understanding Police Culture" by John P. Crank. It's virtually guaranteed to save you from trouble that could be avoided. Many police would not cooperate with him or contribute to this book because they thought it would teach people how to avoid problems with the police. They were right.

We were outside a concert at the old Civic Arena in Pittsburgh (The Big Igloo) and my buddy had a bag of peanuts and was sharing them with everyone. When the peanuts were finished he threw the bag away. Immediately a handful of cops grabbed him and threw him against the wall and started searching him. The next thing we knew there were more cops, even a couple on motorcycles pulling up. Then they started saying "He kicked it" and started looking around, even in nearby shrubs, but they didn't find anything and reluctantly let him go. We never did find out what they thought that they saw.
